On the 1,300 acres of Foxhollow Farm, cows graze the pastures of sunshine-treated grasses, vegetables grow from nutrient-rich soil, and humans are nourished in the beauty of the surrounding woods. When Janey Newton and her siblings took over Foxhollow Farm as the third-generation owners, they developed a deep connection and relationship with the land. Reviving the soil and introducing a variety of plants and animals, they created a community of biodynamic farming. Biodynamic farming is a growing philosophy that avoids the use of chemicals, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, and growth hormones. Foxhollow’s farmers manage the land through the natural system supported by the earth. Foxhollow’s fertilizers are not chemicals, but their own grass-fed cows. Compost and cover crops replenish the nutrients of Foxhollow’s soils after the vegetables have grown and been harvested. As part of its biodynamic practices, Foxhollow Farm keeps chickens, ducks, and a herd of sheep. It sells some duck eggs to local restaurants, but for the most part, the animals are present to contribute to the natural ecosystem that is central to biodynamic processes. Foxhollow’s grass-fed beef is processed at Memphis Meats, a locally owned, small processing facility. The relationship allows Foxhollow to know exactly what happens to its meat along every step of the process. Janey Newton was ingrained in the philosophy underpinning biodynamic growing since before her work at Foxhollow. She taught at a Waldorf school, where the educational components were founded upon the ideas and philosophy of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. In the 1920s, Steiner delivered a series of lectures, now published under the name Agriculture, which explained and promoted biodynamic agriculture. Steiner is considered one of the founders of the modern organic farming movement. Foxhollow Farm carries forward the practices and philosophy of biodynamic agriculture, and invites the surrounding community to learn and discover. Community-wide, the farm promotes the growing movement that encourages consumers to shop with local businesses and local farmers. Within this movement, Foxhollow shows why its biodynamic methods and grass-fed beef are superior not only for consumers, but for the well-being of the animals, the farmers, and the earth.
